The Orecrusher XC event is held annually to raise funds for the Don Ross Secondary School’s Outdoor Leadership Program.
Participating students volunteer to help run the event and receive all proceeds from it.

Don Ross Secondary is proud to be offering grade ten students the opportunity to participate in the Outdoor Leadership 10 program. The program is designed and taught by two experienced teachers, guides and outdoor enthusiasts, Mary Henderson and Devin Biln. This is the sixth year that the program has been offered and it has proven to be a successful and incredibly valuable learning opportunity for the students.

Twenty-five deserving young students have applied for the opportunity to study, as a group, combining their academic studies with learning about leadership in an outdoor setting. As part of their studies, they will be spending at least half of their time on ‘out trips’ doing a variety of activities such as: camping, hiking, orienteering, avalanche awareness, XC-skiing, mountain-biking, canoeing, first-aid and search and rescue.
To pursue these activities, our students will need to bring a different set of resources than simply pencils and paper. The personal cost to each student’s family will be high for gear alone, and the extra instruction required, largely from local experts and professionals to help in each special activity, will cost our program even more.
